The area surrounding Kocs has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Based on the finds, human life can be traced from the Late Bronze Age to the Roman period, and then to the Avar nomadic horsemen.
The first written mention dates back to 1217 in the form of koch. The first documented mention, when the Pókas were the lords of the land, already appears in the form of Kos. /According to the ethnographer Zsigmond Bátky, born in Kocsi, this is a name of Turkish origin, which was borne by a Hungarian person/.
In the Middle Ages, Kocs may have been a significant settlement. Various documents refer to this, which speak of taxes, customs, mill rights, and disobedience. As the landlords who owned the village followed each other – Héderváryak, Batthyány family, Pál Bakith – and the name of the village appeared in various forms. We can also read about the names Kócs, Kooch.
From a development point of view, the Mészárosok Road, which passed through the settlement, was of great importance, as it was an overland trade route connecting the Lowlands with Western Europe. King Matthias's black army also marched on this road to the siege of Vienna.
The stagecoach train also passed through here. It rested and changed horses here.
It cannot be a coincidence that the idea of the first traveling carriage was born in the head of a master carriage blacksmith. According to legend, King Matthias also made good use of the so-called "carriage" carriage at the hands of the carriage blacksmith Péter Habermayer.
